Tameru is one of Ethiopia’s most senior and distinguished lawyers, with a legal career spanning more than five decades across the judiciary and private practice. His practice focuses on business and corporate law, banking and finance, energy and natural resources, commercial advisory work, contract management and dispute resolution. Prior to entering private practice in 1992, Tameru served for two decades in the Ethiopian judiciary, culminating in his appointment as Vice-President of the Supreme Court of Ethiopia.

Highlights include:

Serving as Vice-President of the Supreme Court of Ethiopia and contributing to the development of Ethiopian commercial jurisprudence through the High Court, Specialised Court and Court of Cassation.

Founding and leading one of Ethiopia’s most established business law practices, advising domestic and international clients for more than three decades.

Advising clients on company formation and regulation across banking, insurance, mining, oil and gas, power, finance and hospitality sectors.

Acting in significant civil, corporate and tax disputes, including high-profile litigation matters before Ethiopian courts.

Securing the acquittal of defendants facing tax evasion and money laundering charges exceeding ETB 1 billion, one of the largest such cases brought before an Ethiopian court at the time.

Advising major clients including MIDROC Gold PLC, Ericsson AB, The Boeing Company, UK Export Finance, Royal Bank of Scotland, Liberty Metals & Mining Holdings, Delonex Energy and East Africa Bottling S.C.

Serving as Chairman of the Board of Habesha Cement Company and as a board member of leading Ethiopian financial institutions.

Acting as one of the first lawyers to challenge constitutional-rights violations following Ethiopia’s 2005 elections and serving as lead counsel for detainees brought before the courts.

Tameru is widely regarded as one of Ethiopia’s most distinguished legal practitioners. In 2026, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ethiopian Lawyers Association in recognition of his contribution to the legal profession and the development of law in Ethiopia.

He is a former President of the Ethiopian Bar Association, a founding member of the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU), former Vice-President of the Supreme Court of Ethiopia, and has authored numerous publications on Ethiopian law, legal institutions and commercial practice.
